Note: I know this is an old thread, and am just posting to help anyone else who stumbles upon this thread.

First of all: Wine (just plain wine) is NOT available for Mac, so that leave you with Wineskin, WineBottler, PlayOnMac, or CrossOver.

Wineskin and WineBottler are intended for creating wrappers, which is basically converting it to a Mac application.

  1. What is the best option now to run and configure Windows environments for applications on Mojave now - Wine from MacPorts, Winebottler or WineSkin. Which of this packages more suitable and up to date, with more support from communities? Open-source and freeware of course.
  2. Currently Wine still requires 32-bit code to run 32-bit Windows software, which is a problem for Catalina (which dropped 32-bit code support almost completely), and cannot be solved with a simple recompilation. It's only possible to use Wine for some 64-bit Windows software.

I just got the new MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 (MacBook Air) and tried downloading Warnings at Waverly Academy but had many failed attempts using the (WS8Wine1.3.18) due to mouse lag issues. However after trying the (WS8Wine1.3.34) it worked perfectly! If you have a new Mac operating system I would try that engine first.

Wineskin

Wineskin gives you more customization over your wrapper.

WineBottler also comes with a system that lets you just run any exe on mac just like that.

PlayOnMac lets you download and run supported apps easily, but isn't good for just any exe.

CrossOver is paid software.

If all you want to do is run exes with right-click>Open With, than install WineBottler.

I now that question is common and a lot of threads was... but anyway

Open-source and freeware of course...

Virtual machines and Hipervisors I planing to avoid for releasing additional resources for macOS natively but still need some software working only on Win32 API or .NET/Mono
